A total of 92 Community Police (CPAs) and 12 Fire Service Assistants totalling 104 trainees, have been inaugurated to help curb community crimes and ensure fire safety in the Agona West Municipality of the Central region.
At a ceremony to present them, Mrs Ernestina Ofori Dangbey, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West admonished them to endeavour to eschew extortion and other behaviours that could tarnish their image and work.
The MP said the government under President John Mahama was highly committed to ensuring that youth unemployment was reduced, to enhance socio-economic development.
She said the passing out of CAPs and Fire Service Assistants after their training, marked a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to create job opportunities for the youth, adding that their roles were to serve the community to reduce fire devastation and crime.
The community police and Fire Service Assistants would play vital roles in the government’s efforts to institute the 24-hour economy, to enable citizens to go about their normal businesses with maximum security, she said.
The MP called on the new CPAs and Fire Safety Assistants to serve with humility and honesty to help the police and Ghana Fire Service to achieve it aims and objectives.
She reiterated calls on the chiefs, opinion leaders and other stakeholders to complement the efforts of the CPAs and Fire Safety Assistants to facilitate the discharge of their duties to enhance peace and development.
Mrs Dangbey said the government would consider them for recruitment into security services and CPAs based on their conduct and hard work.
On the current water crisis which has hit Agona Swedru and several surrounding communities, the MP gave the assurance that temporary measures had been put in place by her office and the Municipal Assembly to provide them with tanker supplies.
The MP used the occasion to plead with ‘galamsey’ operators who were currently working in the upstream of the River Ayensu, and other adjoining rivers to halt the menace, to enable citizens to get water supply from the Ghana water Company.
Mrs Ofori Dangbey praised Mr Frank Freebody Mensah, the Agona West Municipal Director of Youth Employment Agency, for his innovation and initiative to create many job opportunities for the youth in the Municipality after assuming office.
Mr Eric Gyamfi Odoom, the Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) said the inauguration of CPA and Fire Service Assistants formed part of the reset agenda and vision of President Mahama to facilitate the transformation of country.
The MCE stated that the selection of the CPAs and Fire Service Assistants was not done on partisan basis because the NDC government believed in inclusivity and warned the inductees to eschew all forms of corruption and extortions from drivers and community leaders.
Mr Gyamfi Odoom cautioned that his office would not hesitate to sack any Community Police and Fire Service Assistant who misconducted themselves to tarnish the image of these institutions and the government.
