Anyaa residents struggle with public transport during rush hours

Residents of Anyaa continue to experience severe transportation challenges during peak hours, characterised by long queues and an acute shortage of public buses on routes to Lapaz and central Accra.

The situation has caused significant hardship for commuters, particularly women and school children, prompting calls for urgent government intervention to improve public transport services in the area.

Insufficient availability of public buses, including Ayalolo and Metro Mass Transit vehicles, has resulted in prolonged waiting times, especially during the early morning and evening rush hours.

Madam Rita Barko, a resident of Anyaa, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she often arrived at the bus station as early as 05:00 hours but had to wait for nearly an hour before securing a seat.

“I join the queue very early, but sometimes it takes close to an hour before a bus arrives, and only a few people are able to board,” she said.

She appealed to relevant stakeholders to support government efforts to improve the transportation system in the Anyaa–Awoshie area.

Mr Joseph Tetteh, a resident of Awoshie, said frequent delays and vehicle breakdowns were negatively affecting productivity and the local economy.

He added that transport fares remained high despite recent reductions in fuel prices, placing additional financial pressure on low-income commuters.

Mr Badu Asempa, a commercial driver operating on the Anyaa–Lapaz route, told the GNA that heavy traffic during rush hours significantly slowed vehicle movement and reduced the number of trips drivers could make.

Mr Wilson Mortey, Secretary of the Abeka-Highway Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), attributed the situation to an insufficient number of private buses serving the area.

According to him, the growing commuter population had outpaced the available transport capacity, necessitating the introduction of more buses, particularly during peak hours.

He appealed to the government to support the GPRTU through loan initiatives to enable private transport operators to acquire additional buses to ease congestion and improve service delivery.
