AWLN Ghana pays tribute to Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter has extended its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, former First Lady, describing her as a visionary leader and tireless advocate for women’s empowerment.

In a statement signed by Dr. Charity Binka, the chairperson of AWLN Ghana, noted that the late Nana Konadu Agyeman – Rawlings, who served as the First Lady for nearly two decades, made an indelible impact on the country’s social and political landscape.

She led Ghana’s delegation to the United Nations Conference on Women held in Beijing 30 years ago, where she championed girl-child education as one of the key outcomes of the conference.

Through her transformative leadership of the 31st of December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu Agyeman- Rawlings uplifted the lives of countless women and children across the country, advancing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, particularly for women in rural communities.

The statement noted that beyond her role as First Lady, she distinguished herself as an astute politician and became the first woman in Ghana to establish and lead a political party, the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Her boldness and determination to actively participate in the country’s democratic process reflected her lifelong belief in women’s equal right to leadership and participation in governance.

“The passing of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is a great loss to Ghana, to Africa, and to all who value women’s advancement,” the statement said.

The AWLN Ghana Chapter also extended its condolences to the Government and People of Ghana, as the country honours the life and legacy of a true trailblazer, whose remarkable contributions would continue to inspire generations to come.

The longest serving First Lady of Ghana passed on last week at the Ridge hospital after a short illness at the age of 76.
