Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, Paramount Chief of the Nsein Traditional Area, has appealed to the government to help resolve the impasse between the Nsein Traditional Council and the Lower Axim Traditional Council.
The impasse is over ownership of the land. Awulae Attibrukusu II, Paramount Chief of the Lower Axim Traditional Area, exercises his jurisdiction.
He stated, “The Nsein Traditional Council has now carved the Lower Town Axim and Nsein Traditional Area to be part of their jurisdiction and has given Awulae Attibrukusu III a-three-month ultimatum to vacate his land.
Awulae Agyefi Kwame II appealed to President John Dramani Mahama through Mr Herbert Kuah Dickson, Municipal Chief Executive ( MCE) of the Nzema-East Municipality, during the climax of the Transition Council Heritage Week, which formed part of the celebration of Ghana Month at Atweabanso, where their forebears first settled before moving to Nsein.

According to Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, who is also President of the Nsein Traditional Council, the President must set up a special committee of enquiry to investigate the matter to know whose land Awulae Attibrukusu is presiding over in the Lower Axim Traditional Area.
The Paramount Chief cautioned that “if by July 01, 2026, Awulae Attibrukusu III does not vacate his land, the government will find it difficult to stop a brutal fight between the Nsein Traditional Council and the Lower Axim Traditional Council”.
On the other hand, Awulae Agyefi Kwame II said, “If Awulae Attibrukusu III decide to stay in the Lower Axim Traditional Area, then he will not exercise the powers to beat the drums in celebration of the Kundum festival.
Awulae Attibrukusu III also has no right to beat any gong-gong to summon people in the area at his palace”.
Reacting to the directive by the Nsein Omanhene, Awulae Attibrukusu III, Paramount Chief of the Lower Axim Traditional Area, told a news conference that he had been on the throne of the Lower Axim Traditional Area for 38 years and could not have been an alien now.
Flanked by members of the Traditional Council clad in red bands and wearing red cloths amidst singing and chanting war songs, he said: “The Nsein Traditional Council used to extend their Kundum festival celebration to Axim, but when he was installed as the Paramount Chief 38 years ago, he stopped them”.
“The issue of Lower Axim and Nsein Traditional Areas has been settled long ago during the Jerry John Rawlings’ regime, but Nsein still lays claim to our land”.
He said, “The people of Lower Axim and Nsein Traditional Areas have been living in peace and harmony since he ascended the throne in the last 38 years”, and wondered why Nsein has revisited an issue that had been resolved.
“We are peace-loving people of Lower Axim. He cannot stop us, and we want the government to tell the Omanhene of Nsein what he must be told”.
