AyaSol initiative launched to support youth-led solar businesses in Ghana

AyaSol, a new renewable energy initiative, has been launched to support young entrepreneurs and to strengthen Ghana’s solar energy sector at the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) Sustainable Energy B2B Expo in Accra.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between technical training and sustainable employment in the country’s growing solar energy industry.

It is funded by the Arthur Waser Foundation and implemented by Swisscontact Ghana in partnership with the Don Bosco Solar Institute and the Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals Association of Ghana

Industry players said that while Ghana’s renewable energy market continues to expand, many trained graduates and technicians still struggle to translate their expertise into viable businesses due to limited access to financing, equipment, market opportunities and business support.

They explained that the initiative is expected to address challenges such as poor installation practices and weak connections within the solar energy value chain.

The AyaSol initiative is, therefore, designed to tackle these constraints by providing practical training, entrepreneurship support, and stronger linkages across the solar energy value chain.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Kofi Anim Ayeko, the Renewable Energy Manager at Swisscontact Ghana, said the programme would empower young people to create sustainable livelihoods while contributing to the country’s renewable energy goals.

“The solar industry presents significant opportunities for job creation and economic growth, particularly as demand for rooftop, off-grid and mini-grid solar systems continues to increase,” he noted.

Aside from the launch, participants were introduced to the AyaSol Seed model through practical demonstrations and exhibitions showcasing how youth-led solar enterprises can operate successfully.

The event attracted policymakers, entrepreneurs, development partners, financial institutions and renewable energy experts who explored ways of promoting innovation, investment and entrepreneurship in the sector.

Organisers expressed the belief that the initiative would not only create employment opportunities for young people but also improve standards within the solar industry and support Ghana’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
