Bee attack at Anloga EP Basic School leaves community in mourning

Two young pupils are reported dead and several others injured after a sudden swarm of bees invaded the Anloga Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Basic School compound on Wednesday. Parents and community members described the incident as a devastating one. Official confirmation of the second fatality is emerging alongside unverified accounts of a possible third death.

Local residents say the attack unfolded in the late morning just after a school activity.

Pupils were on the school grounds when the bees descended rapidly, stinging children and adults alike and sending survivors fleeing in panic.

At least 20 pupils and some teachers were affected and rushed to health facilities, with many requiring urgent medical attention.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as children screamed and ran for shelter. Some witnesses said the initial disturbance may have arisen from pupils playing near a tree where a hidden bee nest was located, though official accounts about the trigger remain unclear.

Community members confirmed that at least two children lost their lives after sustaining severe bee stings.

One victim, a nine-year-old girl, was reported to have fought for her life before succumbing to her injuries. Her father, grieving and overwhelmed, has appealed for support to help with burial arrangements. An additional death has been reported locally, though authorities have not yet released an official toll.

Health workers at Keta Municipal Hospital and nearby clinics have been treating the injured, many of whom are under ten years old. Medical staff are monitoring critical cases, and parents have remained at the hospital throughout the day.

Officials from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene to help disperse the bees and secure the school environment, according to eyewitness reports. School leadership and teachers are reported to have acted quickly to move unaffected pupils to safety.

The tragedy has left families and the wider Anloga community in shock. Neighbours described a sombre atmosphere as they gathered near the school and at hospitals, many calling on government and local authorities to improve safety measures around school compounds to prevent similar incidents in the future.

At the time of filing, neither the Ghana Education Service nor the Ministry of Education had issued an official statement on the attack or confirmed the death toll. Parents and community leaders said they are awaiting updates from health and education officials.
