The Berekum East Municipal Assembly has donated several items worth thousands of cedis to more than 40 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the Bono Region.
The items which include 24 bags of charcoal, fridges, fufu pounding machines, provisions, and wheelchairs, forms part of the disbursements from the Assembly’s common fund and reportedly the largest made by the Assembly so far.
Madam Hajia Fatimatu Abubakar, the Berekum East Municipal Chief Executive, at a brief donation event at Ahenbornoso, assured the public that the Assembly would monitor the beneficiaries to ensure the donations were effectively utilised for their intended purposes.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilise the resources for their specific needs, highlighting the government’s efforts to support PWDs, with an increase in the disability benefits under the common fund from three to five per cent next year.
Mr Kwei Nortey Blamano, the Bono Regional Chairman of PWDs, thanked the government for the fund increase but appealed for the abolishment of taxes on donations received by PWDs, and called for further support in education for the group, regardless of their level.
This initiative aligns with government policies aimed at empowering PWDs among other vulnerable groups and promoting inclusive development.
