Rice farmers at Sefwi-Afere in the Bodi District of the Western North Region, have lauded the government’s directive for schools to purchase maize, eggs, rice and chicken produced in Ghana.
According to the farmers, the directive would ease the burden on local farmers since it would help give them ready market for their produce.
The Finance Minister in presenting the 2026 budget statement in Parliament on Thursday November 13, announced this directive by President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr Emmanuel Biney, Bodi District Chairman, Rice Farmers Association, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sefwi-Afere, said the directive was long over due, but emphasized that it was a welcoming news because it would enable farmers to sell on time and also motivate them to produce more to feed the country.
He noted that it would also motivate the youth to go into farming.
“As I speak, we have large quantities stocked up in the various mills within the district without buyers, so this is a welcoming news to us as farmers,” he said.
He appealed to the government to ensure the directive was not just on paper, but fully implemented to the latter.
The Bodi District in the Western North Region is noted for its vast production of rice, aside cocoa farming.
