Police in Sunyani have gunned down a suspected armed robber inan exchange of gunfire on the Dormaa-Gonokrom highway in the Bono Region.
The deceased, according to the Police, was among a gang of robbers who planned and attempted to attack traders using the stretch.
Addressing a news conference in Sunyani, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCoP) Mr Joshua Coppson, the Bono Regional Police Commander, said the incident happened between February 11 and 12, 2026.
He said the Police had seized five assorted firearms and ammunition, explaining that the Police surveillance team deployed personnel after receiving information about the planned attack.
DCoP Coppson said when the personnel arrived there, the gang opened fire and that resulted in an exchange of bullets, saying the Police later discovered the death of one of the robbers with an AK47 rifle beside him.
He said further search led to the recovery of some other items, including two Baikal single-barrelled guns, one pump action gun, one Beretta pistol with 34 rounds of nine mm ammunition, as well as one AK47 rifle loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition.
Other weapons included 10 rounds of ammunition, 39 rounds of BB Cartridges, one dragger, a mobile phone, a black mask, and a set of talismans hidden in a sack, as well as a Honda Motorbike.

He said the body of the deceased had since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for identification, preservation, and autopsy, assuring that the police were working seriously to identify and apprehend the other suspects.
DCoP urged the public to support the fight against crime by providing the Police with information about people with questionable characters.
