Brake failure sparks multi-vehicle collision in Kumasi

At least five individuals have sustained life-threatening injuries following a road traffic accident that occurred this morning at the Asafo Labour Roundabout in Kumasi.

The accident involved a Kia Rhino truck and a commercial passenger vehicle.

Initial reports indicate that the Kia Rhino, which was transporting plantains from the Amakom direction, experienced a mechanical failure resulting in a loss of braking power.

The driver attempted to mitigate the disaster by swerving from his path, inadvertently colliding with a commercial vehicle travelling from the Kejetia axis.

Manhyia MTTD Commander, DSP Docars Kyei Mensah, confirmed that all injured parties are currently receiving emergency care at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. The driver of the commercial vehicle, initially listed in extremely critical condition, is reportedly beginning to respond to treatment.

“Our officers are on the ground gathering forensic data to determine the exact sequence of events that led to this crash,” DSP Mensah stated.

The collision caused significant disruption to traffic flow in the area. Personnel from the MTTD have since arrived to coordinate the towing of the wreckage and restore order.

The scene also drew a distraught crowd of market women from the Aboabo Market, who identified the victims as colleagues returning from a buying trip in Asante Akyem.
