The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) has held a two-day training workshop on human rights and social inclusion for various stakeholders in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region.
The training, held at Mole, which brought together religious and community leaders, sought to deepen participants’ understanding of human rights and democracy.
It was also aimed at enhancing their knowledge on constitutional provisions and implications of the proposed Family Values Bill, which is currently before Parliament.
Dr Michael Augustus Akagbo, Programmes Manager for Human Rights and Social Inclusion at CDD-Ghana, speaking during the training, highlighted the importance of human rights as the foundation of Ghana’s democracy.
He said, “It’s very important that every Ghanaian has an understanding of what human rights are especially since many decisions we make tend to discriminate or violate rights without us even realizing it.”
He said the training created a safe environment for conversation on human rights especially the subject of LGBT rights, which would enable participants to appreciate the constitutional provisions protecting all citizens.
Participants expressed appreciation for the training saying it was relevant to their operations.
Reverend Gilbert Kwesi Agbefu, a participant, described the workshop as a blessing saying “We didn’t have much knowledge about issues like LGBTQ rights but now we understand better. Some people are born with conditions they did not create, yet the law criminalizes them.”
He added that “This workshop has enlightened us and we will go back to educate our communities. It has also strengthened relationships between Christians and Muslims in Damongo and beyond.”
From the Islamic community, Sulemana Abdul Hafiz of the Damongo Central Mosque, said the training had changed his perspectives on human rights.
He said “We have been imparted with knowledge on what truly constitutes human rights. Misconceptions we had before having been corrected, and we will share these lessons with our Ummah. This was an impactful workshop, and we pray for more such engagements.”
