UMG act and VGMA Female Vocalist of the Year nominee, Christie Quincyna Quarcoopome [Cina Soul] lends her voice to the thousands taking a stand against gender-based violence. The young Neo-soul and Highlife singer and songwriter Cina Soul has delivered a powerful track “Killi Mi”, that addresses toxic relationships, gender based violence and the various abuses women face.  The Ghanaian singer uses her voice and lyrics to paint a picture of the vicious cycle of abuse.

From addressing cheating in her previous song “Ojorley” to domestic violence in her latest single, Cina seems to be on a mission to sensitize and educate listeners on the noxious consequences of being in an abusive relationship.

The song, sung in mostly in her native Ga, touches on one of the difficult parts of abuse—the inability to find help and the difficult cycle many victims find themselves in.

In the early scenes of the video, there is a bizarre yet ingenious script-flip. Cina Soul’s character takes on the persona of an abuser,  perpetrating acts [battery and rape] that are often associated with men in abusive homes. The roles are suddenly switched and her character goes from being a perpetrator to a victim. The vicious cycle of abuse goes on leaving both physically, mentally and emotionally battered and bruised.

In true protest song form, the strength of the lyrics comes packaged in beautifully composed instrumentals. The song, produced by NiiQuaye, has a slow island vibe complete with a strong brass section. While the percussion and guitar has an upbeat and rhythmic feel, the horns showcase the melancholy and despair that the singer is conveying, starting high and ending low. It’s a soul-stirring song that is making many stop and think.

In all the drama, the lovers agree that the way treat each other is wrong and the relation is unhealthy. But, cannot end the relationship because  they are madly in love. This is captured in the prelude of the Gene Adu directed video:

“We tell ourselves every time it’s the last time; that it won’t happen again and then it does. I know you hurt me because I hurt you. I forgive you because I love you, every time you break me I try to fix you, but what happens in the end when I’m broken beyond repairs.”
