Circle–Kasoa drivers, mates arrested for charging illegal fares

A joint monitoring team under the National Security apparatus has rounded up several trotro drivers and their mates for charging transport fares without authorisation.

The crackdown was triggered by a wave of passenger complaints, particularly on the busy Circle–Kasoa route, where commuters were reportedly forced to pay as much as GHC20 per trip, far above the approved rate.

At various lorry parks, the sudden fare spike triggered chaos, with verbal altercations erupting between frustrated passengers and transport hands.

Some drivers, according to eyewitnesses, flatly refused to move unless commuters coughed up the inflated amounts, leaving many stranded at terminals for hours.

Authorities say the arrests are part of a broader regulatory sweep aimed at reining in rogue operators and shielding the public from exploitation on the roads.
