Corporate platforms urged to showcase Agbadza dance for tourism

Stakeholders in Ho have renewed calls for the integration of the Agbadza dance into corporate events to preserve Ghanaian culture and boost tourism.

The call aligns with ongoing efforts to promote indigenous heritage and encourage institutions and event organisers to incorporate traditional performances into formal and social gatherings.

Mr Roland Mensah, a dance teacher, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Ho that incorporating Agbadza into corporate activities, such as “corporate bite,” would help sustain cultural identity while making it appealing to modern audiences.

He explained that the concept blends traditional dance with contemporary corporate settings, creating a platform where professionals and the youth can appreciate and actively participate in cultural expressions.

Mr Mensah noted that the increasing dominance of foreign entertainment styles was gradually pushing indigenous dances into obscurity, making deliberate promotion both timely and necessary.

“Agbadza is not just a dance; it communicates our history and values. Instruments such as the atsimevu (master drum), sogo, kidi, kaganu, and the gankogui (bell), together with rattles, create the unique rhythm that defines the dance,” he said.

Mr Franklin Krelov, a tourism enthusiast, also highlighted the economic benefits of promoting traditional dances, noting that they remain a major attraction for tourists seeking authentic cultural experiences.

“Tourists are always eager to experience something authentic. When Agbadza is featured at corporate events, conferences, and festivals, it enhances visitors’ experience and creates income opportunities for performers,” he added.

The stakeholders, therefore, urged cultural institutions, government agencies, and event planners to support and invest in integrating traditional dances into mainstream programmes to ensure cultural sustainability and national development.
