Members of the HSGF group who have been arrested, where put before the district court on Wednesday and charged with an act of treason that announced the Volta Region of Ghana as now ‘Western Togoland’.

The five have been charged with treason and have been remanded into prison custody until December 4, after the prosecution told the court that they would be needed to assist with investigations.

He asked residents of the region to remain calm and reiterated that the Volta region and all other areas rumoured to have been separated remain a part of the Republic of Ghana.
HSGF, over the weekend, declared the territory they call the ‘Western Togoland’ a sovereign state, an agenda they have been pushing for a while now.

They officially announced their separation in a group meeting in Ho, in the Volta Region, on November 16.

In the statement posted on Facebook, they said,”

“Today the 16th of November 2019, the leader of Western Togoland independence Mr. Charles Kormi Kudzodzi has announced the separation of Western Togoland from Ghana.

He cited numerous reasons as the bases for which the union that was not established must not be recognized. More information will soon reach the General public soon”.

Homeland Study Group Foundation

The Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) group has been fighting for the separation and independence of the former Western Togoland areas, which now form a part of the Volta, Oti, Northern, Upper East and parts of North East Regions.

HSGF has since 2007, been championing the cause for separation, sighting the fact that the agreement to join Ghana, included forming a union after 50 years.

The area in question was first colonized by the Germans but at the end of World War 1, split into two sides. The Eastern side to the French (present-day Togo).

The Western side was a British province and voted to join Ghana in 1956, in a plebiscite just before Ghana gained independence.

The Homeland Study Group Foundation argues that the agreement to join Ghana included forming a union in 50 years.

Leaders of the HSGF group have been in and out of police custody many times over the last few years.

They claim the said union was never formed so since 2007, the group has been championing separation from Ghana.
