Former Black Stars captain, André Dede Ayew, has made a generous donation of GHS10,000 to support the ongoing 6th Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship in the Volta Region.
The gesture shows the legendary football icon’s demonstration of solidarity and commitment to sports development.
The tournament, which is currently underway at the Ho Sports Stadium, has brought together roughly 150 para-athletes from five regions across the country to showcase their sporting excellence and advocate for disability inclusion.
The financial contribution aims to alleviate the burdens faced by the organisers, and will go directly to finance essential needs including athlete welfare, and match-day operations, ensuring the smooth running of the tournament.
Mr Ayew, who was a Special Guest at the 2026 Volta Cup tournament, commended the teams for their determination and asked them to stay focused so they could achieve greater heights.
He reiterated his commitment to the development of sports, stating that his ultimate desire was to see sports grow and create sustainable pathways for young talents across the country.
Mr Edem Agbana, the Member of Parliament for Ketu North, also donated GHS5,000 to support the welfare of the athletes.
Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, who earlier supported the tournament with GHS10,000 and bags of rice, also donated an additional GHS5,000 and 10 bags of rice to the organisers of the tournament.
Mr Botsyo Nkegbe, a representative for the tournament, expressed deep gratitude to Dede Ayew and other donors for the support.
He said the support would provide an immense psychological boost to the para-athletes and help shine a national spotlight on wheelchair sports.
