Dome-Kwabenya: Voters surrender phones as NPP primary progresses

Voting in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary at the Dome-Kwabenya polling centre is underway and progressing smoothly, with voters required to surrender their mobile phones and other electronic gadgets before casting their ballots.

The measure, enforced by the police, is aimed at preventing delegates from taking photographs inside the voting booth.

Delegates deposit their gadgets with security officers and are issued special numbers for collection after voting.
A total of 1,815 delegates are expected to cast their ballots at the Dome-Kwabenya polling station.
Voting commenced at about 0710 hours, slightly behind the official start time of 0700 hours.

The Ghana News Agency gathered that some delegates arrived at the centre as early as 0500 hours, resulting in congestion at the venue.

Mr Kofi Annan Nonoo, the Electoral Officer, told the Ghana News Agency that the decision to create two additional polling centres was to manage the high voter turnout and ensure an orderly process.

He said the voting exercise was progressing smoothly and without any incident.
There was a heavy police presence at the centre to maintain law and order.

Nationwide, a total of 211,849 accredited NPP delegates are eligible to vote at 333 designated centres across Ghana’s 276 constituencies.

Polling is scheduled to close at 1400 hours, after which counting and collation of results will begin.
The five contenders in the NPP presidential primaries are Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
