Door of Return: Nigeria’s version of 'Year of Return' sparks trolls on Twitter

Nigeria is being mocked by members of the Ghanaian public after a picture suggesting the country is planning its version of Ghana’s ‘Year of Return’ initiative surfaced on social media.

Dubbed The Door of Return, the initiative is intended to encourage African diasporans to come to Africa (specifically Nigeria) to settle and invest in the continent.

This is not any different from Ghana’s version which was formally launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in September 2018 declaring 2019 as the year diasporans can return to their roots, learn about their history and enjoy the rich culture of their homeland.

The striking resemblance in the name and the key objectives of the program has prompted trolls on Twitter with many web users teasing Nigeria for copying Ghana.

“Ghana creates #YearOfReturn Nigeria creates #DoorOfReturn Kantaka from Ghana creates Aerocar Nigeria creates AeroOkada. At least if you’re going to copy us copy us well er,” wrote one tweeter.

This #DoorOfReturn initiative is a good Idea but it will end in tears because of the name??. They could have chosing a better name for the initiative,” said another.
