According to reports, at least 50 of the nearly 500 abandoned tricycles belonging to the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA), have been destroyed in a fire at Wa Public Works Department (PWD) yard on Monday.
The fire is said to have started from a garden set up around midday and razed items worth thousands of Ghana Cedis. For about three years, nearly 500 tricycles belonging to SADA have been parked at the offices of the PWD, for reasons yet unknown.
According to Ibrahim Nurideen, an eye witness, the fire started in between bungalows for the officers of the Ghana Highways Authority and the eastern concrete wall of the PWD.
Fobih Otchere Collins, Acting Upper West Regional Engineer of the Public Works Department, says he heard a loud sound whilst in his office and rushed out only to meet the fire ablaze.
He said a call was quickly placed to the Ghana National Fire Service for help.
Deputy Upper West Regional Fire Officer, Eugene Asa-Gyekye led a team of fire personnel to the scene and managed to get the fire extinguished in just about 20 minutes.
It is unclear as to the exact number of tricycles destroyed in the fire, however, reports say at least 50 of the tricycles were completely burnt to the ground.
Most of the tricycles parked in the PWD park had been fixed, whilst others were still fresh in boxes and had been left to rot away.
