Drivers, particularly taxi drivers, who ply the Wiawso-Asawinso highway in the Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region, are calling on the Ghana Highway Authority to urgently repair the numerous potholes on the road.
The 55-kilometre stretch, which connects major communities such as Boako, Asafo, Punikrom, Anyinabrim, Dwenase, Camp, and Datano, has more than 200 potholes, some of which were rapidly deteriorating into manholes, posing significant threat to motorists and pedestrians.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Atta Amos, a taxi driver, called for the immediate attention of the authorities, especially with Christmas approaching, to reduce the risk of accidents.
“It is very dangerous to use this road, especially at night, as attempting to swerve potholes might result in a head-on collision,” he said.
Another driver, Yaw Agyei, expressed frustration, questioning the purpose of road worthiness tests when such a large number of potholes existed on the road.
“What is the essence of paying for road worthy when one can count over 200 big and small potholes on this road,” he lamented.
The Ghana News Agency observed that many of the potholes were located on sharp curves, exacerbating the danger.
The drivers therefore appealed to the government and the Ghana Highway Authority to prioritise repairs and prevent further accidents and damage to their vehicles.
The poor state of the road had not only led to increased maintenance costs for drivers but also posed a significant risk to the safety of passengers and pedestrians.
