ECG unveils GH¢3.46bn roadmap to boost power reliability

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has unveiled a structured GH¢3.46 billion investment programme aimed at resolving chronic power reliability challenges, Acting Managing Director Kwame Kpekpena has announced.

Addressing journalists in Accra, Mr. Kpekpena said the programme is divided into five urgency-based categories but centres on two major implementation phases.

Phase one (GH¢278 million) focuses on immediate grid stabilisation.

This includes the deployment of 2,500 transformers to replace overloaded units, the replacement of 1,600 decayed poles under “Operation Keep the Lights On” (OKLO), and the installation of 2,500 treated poles.

The phase also covers fault repairs on 33kV and 11kV underground cables and the distribution of 28,000 fuses and 240 panels to protect low-voltage networks.

Phase two (GH¢1.2 billion), scheduled for six to twelve months, will involve extensive network reinforcement and construction across key regions, including Accra, Ashanti, Tema, Western, and Volta.

Mr. Kpekpena thanked the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition for its support, stating that the full programme would significantly cut outages and improve voltage quality nationwide.
