The Power Queens’ Club of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ashanti West Region branch, have donated items worth Ghc 35,000 to students of the Physically Challenged Action Foundation at Offinso in the Ashanti region.
The items included wheelchairs, packs of bottled water, sanitary pads, tissues, packs of detergents, sacks of rice, tin mackerels, mosquito sprays and assorted drinks among other needed items.
The club also presented an undisclosed amount of money to students.
Ms Rita Adjei, President of the Club, speaking at the presentation ceremony, said the charitable act formed part of their Corporate Social Responsibility.
“This gesture forms part of ECG Power Queens’ Club programmes geared towards improving the welfare and livelihood of the underprivileged,” she said.
After hearing the sad stories and plights of the students living with disabilities at the Foundation, Ms Adjei noted that, the club showed increased interest in supporting the Foundation with the little it had.
She encouraged the general public to also reach out to Persons living with Disabilities (PWDs) to ensure that they lived a comfortable and meaningful life since they were also humans.
Additionally, Ms Adjei appealed to the public to avoid ridiculing or stigmatising PWDs so as not to drive them into isolation and self-harm.
Mr Barimah Antwi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Physically Challenged Action Foundation, said the Foundation had been in existence for over 50 years and had trained thousands of PWDs in the country.
He explained that the Foundation mobilized PWDs from their homes and on the streets of the country to support them through rehabilitation, vocational training and business set up.
These, Mr Antwi said, the Foundation believed, would equip the PWDs to be resourceful and independent in the society while living their lives comfortably.
He thanked the ECG Power Queens for the kind gesture in reaching out at a time the Foundation was recording an increased number of admissions.

Mr Antwi further called on other corporate bodies, individuals and philanthropists to also support the Foundation, which sought to impact the lives of PWDs in the Ghanaian society.
The ECG Power Queens’ Club is an association of female workers of the power distribution company that promotes gender inclusion and addresses social injustice.
