Mr. John Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has paid a working visit to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and its subsidiary, GNPC Explorco, as part of his ongoing tour of agencies under his Ministry.
The visit was aimed at engaging management and staff, reviewing progress, and discussing strategies to address the decline in Ghana’s oil production.
It was also to strengthen collaboration, improve operational efficiency, and align institutional efforts with government’s energy objectives.
GNPC Explorco, established as the upstream subsidiary of GNPC, has the mandate to build Ghanaian technical capacity in petroleum exploration and production.
The company directly participates in upstream activities, develops local expertise, and promotes greater national ownership of oil and gas resources.
The Minister, in addressing managements from both entities, commended GNPC and GNPC Explorco for their dedication to Ghana’s upstream petroleum development.
Mr. Jinapor, however, expressed concern about the country’s declining oil output and challenged both institutions to intensify efforts toward exploration and new field development.
“Our oil production has been declining over the past few years, and that is a matter of concern for all of us.”
“GNPC and its subsidiary Explorco must take the lead in reversing this trend through aggressive exploration, innovation, and strategic partnerships. We must do everything possible to sustain production and safeguard Ghana’s energy future,” he stressed.
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting GNPC and its subsidiaries with the resources and policy direction needed to build a strong and integrated national oil company capable of competing on the global stage.
Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, assured the Minister of the Corporation’s resolve to deliver on its mandate.
He said GNPC continued to invest in exploration, capacity development, and strategic partnerships aimed at sustaining and growing Ghana’s oil reserves.
“We fully share the Minister’s concern about declining production levels. At GNPC, we are working closely with Explorco and our partners to identify new opportunities, increase reserves, and enhance operational efficiency.”
“Our goal is to ensure that GNPC remains a strong pillar in Ghana’s energy transition and economic development,” Mr. Amoah added.
Mr. Sam Arthur, Managing Director of GNPC Explorco, briefed the Minister on ongoing exploration projects and initiatives to strengthen technical capacity within the company.
He reiterated Explorco’s commitment to pursuing its strategic mandate and contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s upstream growth.
