Excavator operator jailed 15 years for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 48‑year‑old excavator operator to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbing a woman and her son at gunpoint at Lakeside in Accra.

The convict, Kingsley Abdul Wahab Lawani, was found guilty on five counts of robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit, robbery.

Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Eric Ransford Abban, said the complainant, a businesswoman residing at Lakeside Transformer, was attacked together with her son by Lawani and two accomplices, one deceased and the other at large.

The court heard that on April 27, 2025, the complainant returned home with her son in an unregistered Honda CRV when the assailants, armed with a pistol, confronted them, fired a warning shot and robbed them of mobile phones and the vehicle’s ignition key.

The complainant and her son raised an alarm, leading to Lawani’s arrest at the scene with the weapon.

His accomplice, Richard Opoku Adjei, sustained injuries during the escape attempt and later died at the Police Hospital.

Investigators retrieved one empty cartridge and two live rounds at the scene.

Lawani admitted the offence in his caution statement and was subsequently convicted after a full trial.
