The University of Development (UDS) has secured a spot in the finals of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Football Championship after a 5-4 victory on penalties against the University of Granada from Spain.

Despite a very tough encounter which saw regulation ending goalless, UDS goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo made a heroic save during the shootouts to ensure his side booked a spot in the finals of the competition to be played at the Suoyuwan Stadium in Dalian, China.

Since the beginning of the games, the UDS team has been impressive, setting the record of being the first African University to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The UDS head coach Tanko echoed the joy that came with the victory that qualified them for semi-finals and now the finals, emphasising that it was a win for Africa.

“This is not just a win for UDS; it is a win for Ghana, for Africa and for every young player dreaming of showing their talent on the world stage. We played with heart, unity and pride,” he said.

The team’s journey to the finals has been remarkable, having grabbed a 5-2 win over the Kyungil University of South Korea in the quarterfinals.

Since its formation as a global governing body in 1949, FISU has organised various university games for participants around the world. Its mission is to connect and exchange with students from around the world in a collaborative and competitive environment.

The UDS team would be hoping to make Ghana proud on Sunday, September 28, 2025, when they come up against Paulista University of Brazil, who are the defending champions of the competition.
