Former Public Service Commissioner praises GNA for professionalism, high ethical values

Mr Mike K. Gabah, a former Commissioner, Public Services Commission, has commended the Ghana News Agency (GNA) for maintaining a high level of professionalism and ethical values in the nation’s media space for decades.

Established on the eve of Ghana’s independence in 1957, the GNA is Ghana’s official wire service mandated to provide independent, objective and comprehensive coverage of national events and development issues.

The Agency operates in all the 16 regions and supplies news to both local and international media organisations.

“In fact, the GNA is well known for its authentic products, and whenever I see GNA stories I know they are highly reliable and authentic,” Mr Gabah said.

The former commissioner gave the commendation when he facilitated a training on the topic: “Effective Supervision in Public Service Institutions” in Accra on Thursday, as part of a three-day conference of the Agency, underway in Accra.

The conference has brought together regional managers, nationwide, and other head office middle level staff and heads of units, to review coverage outputs, examine thematic reporting and discuss operational challenges affecting newsgathering and dissemination.

It also sought to assess the Agency’s performance over the past year, and develop strategies to strengthen its operations for 2026 and beyond.

Mr Gabah told the participants that: “Your work is very professional,” asking them to strive to consistently adhere to high ethical standards.

He indicated that effective supervision remained a prerequisite for good decision making, coordination and accountability and possibly translate into good evaluation, feedback and thereby improve work productivity.

He advised the supervisors to be manageable, endeavour to be objective, fair and impartial and tactfully as well as manage their emotions and thereby maintain harmony among their subordinates.
