Four arrested after police dismantle deadly Kumasi carjacking syndicate

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a violent carjacking gang, arresting four suspects in connection with a series of robberies in Kumasi and Tarkwa.

The operation was launched following the fatal shooting of Andrews Amankwaa during a robbery at Ohwim Amanfrom on February 10, 2026.

His Toyota Hilux was stolen, and he later died from his injuries.

IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno announced on Monday that the suspects, Akwasi Manu, Bashiru Tanko, Kwadwo Amponsah, and Emmanuel Kwame Appiah, were arrested between February 18 and 22.

Appiah is identified as the getaway driver in the fatal robbery.

A fifth suspect, alleged gang leader Eric Antwi Duku, sustained gunshot wounds during a police operation and died.

Police recovered a pistol, ammunition, a tracking device, and several stolen vehicles.

Investigations reveal the gang targeted Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser vehicles, conducted surveillance on victims, and had links to Tarkwa, Offinso, and Dubai for forging documents.

The four suspects are in custody and will be arraigned soon.
