GACC trains civic actors on audit participation

The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has organised a zonal capacity-building workshop in Tamale for civic actors to enhance their understanding of the Auditor-General’s Report and the use of the CitizensEye App to increase citizen participation in the national audit process.

The workshop aimed to strengthen public demand for accountability and transparency in the country’s public financial management system and equip participants with practical skills to monitor governance issues.

It was organised under a coalition led by the African Centre for Energy Policy as part of the project, “An Anti-Corruption Initiative for Enhancing Governance and Accountability,” funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Madam Cordelia Mensah, Northern Regional Auditor of the Ghana Audit Service, said audit reports were often viewed as technical or academic documents but represented health checks of the country’s democracy. She described the CitizensEye App as a vital accountability tool that enables citizens to identify governance challenges and report them directly to appropriate authorities, bridging the gap between citizens and duty-bearers.

The workshop included practical sessions on navigating the CitizensEye App, reporting irregularities in real time, verifying cases, and promoting collaborative oversight.

Mr Samuel Harrison-Cudzoe, Programmes Officer at GACC, said the training sought to ensure civil society actors understood the Auditor-General’s Report and effectively used the CitizensEye App to report wastage, corruption, and satisfaction levels with public services.

He stressed that fighting corruption required an informed citizenry and noted that GACC’s Local Accountability Networks annually tracked issues raised in the Auditor-General’s Report and followed up with assemblies to assess implementation of recommendations.

He underscored that increased public awareness and visible sanctions for corrupt practices were essential in combating corruption.
