GAF holds justifier to select athletes for national team ahead of 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship

The Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) has successfully concluded a high-stakes, one-day national justifier aimed at scouting and selecting the country’s elite pullers for the upcoming 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship.

The event, which drew hundreds of athletes from across the regions, served as a final battleground for those seeking to don the national colours.

With Ghana currently ranked as a powerhouse in African armwrestling, the selection process was rigorous, focusing on technique, endurance, and raw power.

The justifier featured various weight categories for both men and women, including junior, senior, and master divisions.

Technical directors and national coaches led by Husseini Akutteh Addy, Technical Director of GAF, were on hand to monitor the bouts, ensuring that only the most prepared athletes make the cut for the “Golden Arms”—Ghana’s national armwrestling team.

Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the GAF and Vice President of the World Armwrestling Federation, noted that the level of competition had improved significantly since Ghana hosted the previous edition of the continental showpiece.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), lauded the federation for its consistency and professional approach to athlete development.

“The Ghana Armwrestling Federation continues to prove that with the right leadership and discipline, ‘lesser-known’ sports can achieve world-class status. We at the GOC are fully behind these athletes.

“Their dedication is a reflection of the Ghanaian spirit, and we are confident that the team selected here today will not only compete but dominate the African stage once again,” he said.

The 15th Africa Armwrestling Championship scheduled for May 1-2, 2026, is expected to bring together the continent’s finest pullers. For Ghana, the stakes are high; the federation aims to top the medal table and further cement its position as the number one armwrestling nation in Africa.

With the team now being finalized, the “Golden Arms” will enter an intensive residential training camp to fine-tune their skills before departing for the championship.

The federation has called on corporate Ghana to support the team’s journey as they prepare to bring home more continental glory.
