GES pledges to integrate farm-based initiatives in school curricula

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has pledged to integrate farm-based initiatives in school curricula to promote and transform agriculture in Ghana.

Dr Munawura Issahaque, the Deputy Director General for Quality and Access of the GES, who disclosed this, said the GES was convinced that true education equips young people to thrive in the real world.

He was speaking on behalf of the Director General of GES at the 2025 Kosmos Innovation Centre (KIC) School Farm Awards organised in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, Blue Skies Foundations and Kosmos Energy.

The award ceremony was on the theme; “Rethinking Agriculture: Growing Young Minds to Feed Ghana’s Future.”

Dr. Issahaque noted that the school farm competition could empower students to go beyond planting crops to cultivate critical thinking, resourcefulness, teamwork, and the skill to turn ideas into tangibility.

The GES thinks agricultural education is not just a curriculum subject but a strategic necessity for tackling youth unemployment, reducing hunger, and revitalizing communities, he noted. 

Dr Issahaque said the GES would deepen its collaborations with KIC, Mastercard Foundation and Blue Skies Foundation to expand the school farm competition to schools in every district and region in Ghana.

He encouraged the students to embrace agriculture as innovators who would not only nourish Ghana with crop production but with bold visions and ground-breaking solutions.

Additionally, Dr Issahaque acknowledged the contributions of partners whose investments have helped lay the foundation for broader prosperity by positioning agriculture as a viable enterprise.

Mr Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, the Executive Director of KIC, said his organisation was ready to strengthen its partnership with the GES to promote innovative agriculture in schools.

He applauded GES for the bold step to incorporate farm-based initiatives into the school curricula to support the drive to promote hands-on agriculture among students.
