Akwesi Agyeman, a member of the Black Stars Management Committee, has expressed support for head coach Otto Addo following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite the team’s disappointing performance, Agyeman believes that maintaining continuity in the technical team is crucial for future success.
In an interview, Agyeman emphasized the importance of a long-term strategy, stating, “If you consider the long-term vision, consistency is essential. Football is about results, yes, but right now, in just a few months, we have two critical games against Chad, home and away, to keep our World Cup hopes alive. I don’t think this is the right time for a change.”
He also highlighted the negative effects of frequent coaching changes in recent years, suggesting that stability could enhance the team’s prospects in upcoming competitions.
Otto Addo, who began his second tenure as Black Stars coach in March 2024, has faced criticism after Ghana failed to win any of their six AFCON qualifying matches, marking the nation’s first absence from the tournament since 2004.
Despite this setback, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to retain Addo, with expectations for him to lead the team through the remaining 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The GFA plans to engage key stakeholders in developing a comprehensive roadmap to rebuild the Black Stars, focusing on fostering collective will and single-mindedness to restore the team’s fortunes.
As the team prepares for crucial matches ahead, the emphasis remains on achieving stability and implementing a strategic plan to ensure success in future tournaments.
