Ghana Immigration Service launches “Project SECOBOR” to fortify National Borders

The Governing Council of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has launched a major new national initiative, Project SECOBOR (Secure Our Borders), designed to comprehensively strengthen the security and management of the country’s borders.

The announcement was made during a strategic meeting between the GIS Governing Council and the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, in Accra.

Chairman of the GIS Governing Council, Rev. Stephen Wengam, outlined the project as a critical strategic framework to enhance national security, ensure effective border management, and curb revenue losses.

He stressed that the initiative seeks to mobilize essential resources through innovative public and private sector partnerships.

“Project SECOBOR will provide the structured approach needed to retool and empower the Immigration Service,” stated Rev. Wengam.

He highlighted that inadequate resourcing poses a direct risk to national peace and security, while commending President John Dramani Mahama for his sustained commitment to equipping the nation’s security agencies.

In response, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak praised the Council’s proactive and visionary leadership.

“This initiative exemplifies the innovative thinking required to address contemporary security challenges,” he said.

The Minister pledged the Ministry’s full support and further assured the public of a transparent and fair upcoming GIS recruitment process.

In a highlight of the meeting, the Governing Council presented the Transformational Leader Award to Minister Mubarak in recognition of his exceptional performance and impactful interventions that have significantly benefited the GIS.

The high-level meeting was attended by Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, acting Chief Director of the Ministry Mrs. Doreen P. Annan, Comptroller-General of Immigration Samuel Basintale Amadu, and members of the GIS Governing Council.


Project SECOBOR (Secure Our Borders) is a strategic initiative by the Ghana Immigration Service to secure vital resources through public-private partnerships.

Its goal is to dramatically enhance border surveillance, control, and management capabilities to safeguard Ghana’s territorial integrity and national security.
