Ghana’s Black Stars fell 2-0 to Mexico in an international friendly on Saturday, conceding in each half as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match offered Ghana’s Technical Team an opportunity to assess the squad, with several players seeking to impress ahead of the final squad announcement.
Black Stars first-choice goalkeeper Benjamin Asare retained his place in goal behind a back four of Jan Kwasi Gyamerah, Nathaniel Adjei, Oscar Oppong and Terry Yegbe.
Emmanuel Agyei, captain Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi operated in midfield, while Daniel Agyei partnered Felix Afena-Gyan in attack.
Mexico took the lead within two minutes through Brian Gutiérrez and dominated possession for much of the first half, heading into the break with a 1-0 advantage.
Guillermo Martínez extended the hosts’ lead in the 54th minute. Coach Desmond Ofei who led the technical team for this match made several changes in response, introducing Prince Amoako, Jerry Afriyie and Razak Simpson in the 66th minute for Rak-Sakyi, Daniel Agyei and Afena-Gyan.
Further substitutions followed as Abdul Aziz Issah, Joseph Opoku, Salim Adams and Solomon Agbasi replaced Ashimeru, Osman, Agyei and Asare.
Ghana showed improved urgency in the closing stages but were unable to reduce the deficit, as Mexico held on to secure a comfortable win.
The fixture formed part of Ghana’s build-up to the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
Head Coach of the Black Stars Carlos Queiroz is expected to name his final 26-man squad on June 1 and the team would face Wales in a friendly match in Cardiff on June 2, 2026.
