Godwin Asediba named Journalist of the Year at GJA awards held in Kumasi

The 29th annual Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Awards on Saturday crowned Godwin Asediba of TV3 (Media General) as the 2024 “Journalist of the Year,” recognising outstanding documentary reporting and a strong year of broadcast journalism.

The ceremony, hosted on November 8 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi under the patronage of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked the first time the event was held outside Accra. The theme, “Safeguarding Ghana’s future: The role of the media in promoting peace, security and the fight against galamsey,” reflected a broader push for journalism that supports national stability and governance.

More than 300 entries from print, radio, television and online were submitted this year, underlining stiff competition among Ghana’s media professionals. The Multimedia Group Limited made a strong showing, collecting several awards across categories.

President John Dramani Mahama used the platform to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to the safety and independence of journalists. He said the government would establish a standing forum with the media to reduce the risk of conflict between newsrooms and security agencies.

In his remarks, the Acting Chief Justice, Paul BaffoeBonnie, called on newsrooms to transform into “sanctuaries of truth,” urging editors and journalists to uphold standards while confronting critical national issues such as illegal mining and environmental degradation.

Other major awards included Doreen Ampofo of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), who was named Best Female Journalist, and several others recognised for their work in news reporting, features, documentaries, health, science and environment.

Bringing the GJA’s flagship event to the Ashanti Region underscored efforts to decentralise Ghana’s media accolades and highlight regional voices. The presence of the Asantehene and prominent media and corporate figures lent prestige to the evening.

Despite the celebration, the event also carried undercurrents of tension. The investigative newsroom The Fourth Estate publicly announced it would not accept any awards from the GJA this year, citing concerns about corporate sponsorship and editorial independence after its reporting on a controversial state deal involving the National Lottery Authority.
