His Excellency, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has hinted on government’s plans to change the National Identification numbers currently being issued out, into Tax Identification numbers by close of the year 2020.
Speaking at the official launch of Absa Bank Ghana, the Vice-President said, this move is to widen the tax net of eligible tax payers in the country.
According to him, this move will help the country to increase the number of taxpayers from the current 2 million people to about 16 million people in the space of one year.
He said: “Currently less than 2 million people are registered to pay taxes. But by the end of this year, we will converting all the National ID numbers into Tax Identification numbers. Which means we will increase the number of people registered for taxes, de facto froom about 2 million to some 16 million.”
