The government has announced a comprehensive support package for citizens being evacuated from South Africa, following ongoing xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.
In a public notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, authorities confirmed that measures are in place to ensure the safe return and effective reintegration of affected citizens.
According to the Ministry, all evacuees will benefit from a multi-pronged assistance plan designed to help them resettle back home.
Key components of the package include a “Welcome Home Financial Package” as part of immediate relief efforts.
There will also be transportation assistance to help returnees travel to their various destinations across Ghana upon arrival, and a reintegration allowance to support them as they rebuild their lives after leaving South Africa under distressing circumstances.
Recognizing the emotional and psychological toll of the attacks, the government will also provide free psychosocial support services to affected individuals.
Additionally, evacuees will be registered in a special database aimed at connecting them with job opportunities and start-up support programmes.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the intervention as a reflection of the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad and supporting them during crises.
“We value and cherish all our citizens,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, the first batch of 300 Ghanaians is set to be evacuated via a special chartered flight scheduled for Thursday, May 21.
