Gov’t demands accountability, justice after attack on peacekeepers in Lebanon
The Government of Ghana has issued a firm demand for justice and accountability following a brazen attack on its soldiers serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, an incident that left two personnel seriously wounded.
In a statement released on Saturday, 7th March, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that Ghana has lodged an official protest with the United Nations, calling for an urgent and transparent investigation.
The attack, which took place on March 6 in southern Lebanon, involved members of the Ghanaian battalion deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The Government described the assault as a “condemnable act” and a serious violation of international law that directly threatens the safety of those serving under the UN flag.
Ghana is demanding a full, immediate, and impartial inquiry to uncover the circumstances of the attack, with the clear goal of identifying and holding the perpetrators accountable.
“This attack is not only an assault on our gallant soldiers but on the very principles of international peace and security,” the statement reads.
The government has also urged the United Nations to immediately review and strengthen the security protocols for the Ghanaian contingent and all peacekeepers stationed in the volatile region.
“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection,” the Foreign Ministry affirmed.
The nation’s thoughts and prayers are with the injured personnel and their families as they recover.
Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to UN peacekeeping, Ghana stressed that the inviolability and safety of peacekeeping personnel must remain a cornerstone of global security efforts.

The Ministry will continue to engage with UN authorities and monitor developments closely.
