GRCS engages gov’t for funds to support operations – President

Dr Edward Donkoh, the National President of the Ghana Red Cross Society (GRCS), says its leadership was engaging the government to allocate funds to support the Society’s operations in 2026 and beyond.

He commended the government for its readiness to include the Ghana Red Cross Society in its budget, saying it would help reduce the operational cost of the Society.

At the maiden Upper West Regional End of Year get-together event at Wa, Dr Donkoh underscored the importance of the Red Cross’s mission to serve humanity selflessly, saying the government’s intervention would be instrumental in enhancing its operations.

The GRCS’s National President recognised volunteers’ relentless work in first aid, disaster response, and other essential services, which were the core mandate of the Society.

He expressed gratitude to the volunteers in the Upper West Region for their dedicated services, emphasising their key role in delivering aid during disasters and other emergencies and national events.

Dr Donkoh said he was inspired by the Society’s global efforts in humanitarian interventions, such as its work in assisting civilians affected by the Ukraine-Russia war.

“In fact, a few months ago, during the Ukraine and Russia war, they were having challenges trying to move people who were trapped within the war.

They had to fall on the International Committee of the Red Cross, and they responded,” he explained.

He reaffirmed the Red Cross’s dedication to serving humanity and upholding dignity for those in need.

Mr Charles Lwanga Pouzing, the Upper West Regional Minister, who was also the Patron of the Society in the region, expressed happiness about the members’ dedication in the region and pledged his continued support for the society’s effective functioning.

Maria Johana Yuorpor, the Upper West Regional Chairperson of the GRCS, said the event was to allow volunteers to interact, reflect, encourage one another and celebrate their collective achievements for the past years.

The get-together was organised to celebrate veteran volunteers who had selflessly served the Society for decades, and to motivate younger members and volunteers to remain committed to humanitarian service.

Four stakeholders and 15 volunteers were honoured with certificates in recognition of their commitment and contributions to the effectiveness of the Society in the region.
