GRIDCo boss calls for stronger adherence to safety principles

Mr Mark Awuah Baah, the Acting Chief Executive of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has urged staff across the country to prioritise strict adherence to safety principles, policies and international standards.

He said the company continued to modernise its operations through technology.

Delivering a virtual address at the 2025 Corporate Safety Durbar and Awards Ceremony in Kumasi, he emphasised the importance of the event as a reminder of GRIDCo’s collective responsibility to promote safety in all operations.

He noted that the annual safety durbar remains a critical platform for reinforcing safety values, reviewing performance, and deepening commitment to protecting lives and property.

“We want to ensure that we consistently adhere to safety principles, policies, rules and benchmark ourselves with international standards. This is how GRIDCo remains at the top when it comes to safety,” he stressed.

As part of activities marking the celebration, the company organised an inter-departmental safety quiz, safety walks across various operational areas, health screenings, wellness exercises, and a blood donation exercise to demonstrate corporate social responsibility.

The Acting Chief Executive congratulated the Kumasi Area for excelling in the safety quiz and encouraged other areas to improve and return stronger in the next competition.

He expressed concern over the limited participation of the family members of its staff in the safety walks and called for greater involvement in subsequent years.

Engaging families in GRIDCo’s safety culture, he said, was essential because safety must extend beyond the workplace into homes and communities.

“Our goal is to build a GRIDCo family that is safe and well-informed. Whatever knowledge you acquire here should be shared with your children, spouses and families so that safety becomes part of their daily lives,” he added.

Touching on the theme, “Revolutionising Occupational Health and Safety: The Role of Technology,” he highlighted the increasing deployment of drones, advanced software and other digital tools to enhance GRIDCo’s operations.

While assuring staff that these technologies are not intended to replace human judgment or labour, he underscored the need for caution and awareness of technology-related hazards.

“Technology will improve our processes, but it also comes with risks. We must be mindful of how we sit, how we work with computers, and how we adapt to new digital systems. The objective is to gain the benefits while managing the hazards,” he emphasised.

He encouraged staff to fully participate in the Durbar’s knowledge-sharing sessions, adopt best practices, and continuously update their skills to align with modern safety standards.

He also urged employees to network, build new relationships, and strengthen teamwork as part of the safety culture.

The event, which also featured friendly sporting activities, brought together staff from the northern and southern zones of GRIDCo to celebrate milestones in occupational health and safety while recommitting to a future of safer operations across the national grid.
