A 29-year-old hit-and-run victim, Charles Amissah, died after being refused emergency care by three major hospitals in Accra, the Police hospital, Ridge hospital, and Korle Bu Teaching hospital, over nearly three hours, all citing “no bed syndrome.”
Reports indicate that the National Ambulance Service responded within minutes to the February 6, 2026, crash at Circle Overpass.
They stabilized Charles and rushed him to the Police Hospital, then to Ridge, and finally to Korle Bu, but each facility turned him away.
Despite pleading by EMS crews, no hospital offered care, even when they offered to use the ambulance trolley.
According to reports, at the Korle Bu Teaching hospital, crews spent over 30 minutes negotiating as the patient’s condition worsened, but were instead advised to go to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) at Legon.
Charles went into cardiac arrest and died in the ambulance.
Only then did a doctor come out to certify his death.
His family, unaware, reported him missing and only identified his body at the Korle Bu mortuary three days later.
