Ho Mosque Shooting: Police release all 14 suspects as regional Chief Imam alleges bias

The Volta Regional Police Command has released all 14 suspects arrested in connection with the Boxing Day shooting at the Ho Central Mosque.

The release comes amidst strong condemnation from the Office of the Volta Regional Chief Imam, which has accused security agencies of partiality and failing to prevent the violence.

The shooting, which injured several worshippers, occurred on December 26.

In a statement dated December 27, the office of the Regional Chief Imam, Alhaji Ali Muniru, described the incident as a violation of the sanctity of the mosque and the tragic result of a prolonged dispute.

The statement, signed by spokesman Chief Adamu Hamani, alleged that a faction at the Sabong Zango area has “persistently prevented” Alhaji Muniru from accessing the mosque through “threats, intimidation, and violence.”

It claimed repeated appeals to the police to ensure the Chief Imam’s safe access were ignored.

Further, the office expressed “disturbing” concerns about the security response after the shooting.

It alleged that police ignored video evidence of attacks on the Chief Imam’s supporters and instead arrested individuals perceived to be aligned with him.

The statement also criticized the swift reopening of the mosque, declared a crime scene for use by the opposing faction, calling it an action that “severely undermines public confidence in the neutrality of the security agencies.”

The office called for “professional, impartial, and courageous action” from security agencies and urged Muslims in the region to remain calm and law-abiding.

When contacted, the Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Akorli, stated that preliminary investigations indicate the shooting was premeditated.

“Meticulous investigations are still ongoing into the matter,” DCOP Akorli said. “The police will not take sides.”
He confirmed that calm has returned to the Zango area but noted police will maintain a presence to ensure peace.

While the Commander did not directly comment on the releases, Graphic Online confirms all 14 suspects sent to Accra for interrogation have been freed.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions at the Ho Central Mosque, with the Regional Chief Imam’s office now publicly questioning the neutrality of the police investigation.
