HURDS/AWDF launches KASA! project in Western Region

The Human Rights and Development Services (HURDS) has embarked on an advocacy campaign to address Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the Western Region.

The project is dubbed: ‘KASA!’ will ensure the protection, empowerment and sustenance of support for survivors of sexual violence.

Madam Eugenia Dery, the Programme Officer at HURDS at the inception meeting, said through direct and targeted actions, including support from a dedicated fund, access to justice would be achieved.

She referred to the 2022 demographic and health survey reported which showed that one out of every seven women had experienced violence in their lifetime and stated that although significant strides had been made in addressing SGBV, there were still vulnerability issues that hinged on poverty.

Madam Maribel Okine, the Western Regional Director for the Department of Gender, mentioned the establishment of a Fund to cater for victims of domestic violence.

Nana Egya Kwamina XI, the Chief of Apremdo, said it was becoming worrying that issues such as “for girls,” sextortion, and sexual abuses, were becoming rampant in communities and schools, and called for strengthened collaboration and revised institutional mandate to nib it in the bud.
