Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, has assured the people of Anlo that the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Project in the Volta Region has not been shelved, contrary to rumours circulating in some quarters.
The assurance was given when he received a delegation of chiefs, queens, Municipal and District Chief Executives from the Anlo Dukor, sent by the Awoamefia of the Anlo State, Togbi Sri III, and led by the Awadada of the Anlo, Togbi Agbesi Awusu II.

The delegation visited the Minister to seek clarification over concerns and reports suggesting that the project had been discontinued.

Mr Gunu dismissed the claims, stating that the project remained active and on course.
“I want to state clearly that the WACA project has not been cancelled. It is very much alive, and processes are ongoing to ensure its successful implementation,” he said.
He disclosed that the World Bank had already released funds for aspects of the project, adding that preparatory activities were underway.

The Minister said he had recently chaired a meeting with officials of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA), during which it was confirmed that a one-week training programme for three beneficiary districts in the Volta region had been scheduled to take place in Aburi.

Mr Gunu emphasised that the Government was fully committed to the successful rollout of the project, with various ministries actively handling different components to ensure a smooth take-off.
Also present at the meeting were Mr Wisdom Seade, Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, and Madam Sandra Kpedor, District Chief Executive for Anloga.

They confirmed that LUSPA officials had recently visited their respective districts to engage stakeholders and explain that the project required the establishment of proper institutional and technical frameworks before full implementation.

Mr Gunu described the WACA Project as critical to addressing coastal challenges such as erosion, flooding and land degradation, while improving livelihoods in affected communities.

He urged residents to remain calm and assured them that the project would be implemented as planned.
The Minister commended Togbi Agbesi Awusu II and the Anlo Dukor for their proactive engagement and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working closely with traditional authorities to protect coastal communities and promote sustainable development in the Volta Region.
