As part of activities to mark the 2025 World Tourism Day, residents of Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region planted coconut trees in a symbolic gesture celebrating culture, heritage, and sustainable development.

Agavedzi is a coastal community grappling with the effects of tidal waves.

The Municipal Assembly provided 200 coconut seedlings for planting, serving as a strategic intervention to promote environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and tourism development along the coastal belt.

Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, emphasised the cultural and economic importance of coconut trees in coastal communities.

“In this coastal community, we see the coconut as a cash crop and family wealth. Generations after generations benefit from it,” she stated.

Madam Gomashie, also the Member of Parliament of Ketu South, connected the initiative to broader conversations around the blue economy, a development model that encompasses marine and coastal resources as drivers of economic growth.

“Our beautiful coastline from Aflao to Half Assini is a tourism product we have not fully capitalised on,” she said.

“World Tourism Day 2025 is an opportunity to educate our people about keeping our beaches clean. Charity begins at home hence the reason we are starting here in Agavedzi.”

President John Dramani Mahama recently cut the sword for the commencement of the second phase of the sea defence project at Agavedzi, to mitigate the impact of coastal erosion.

Mr Nicholas Worclachie, the Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive, urged the community to rally behind the Ministry to boost tourism and development in the area.

He emphasised that such initiatives were crucial to driving local economic growth and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.

The tree planting activity marked a renewed commitment by the region to align with global tourism goals while addressing local environmental and economic challenges.
