Key Highlights from Akufo-Addo’s Final State of the Nation Address

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered his final State of the Nation Address on January 3, 2025, highlighting key achievements and challenges during his tenure. Here are five major takeaways from his speech:

1. Security and Stability Amid Regional Turmoil

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that Ghana has maintained its territorial integrity and security despite regional instability. He noted that, by the grace of God, Ghana remains the only country in the neighborhood that has not fallen victim to terrorist violence. This stability has been achieved through deliberate policy, planning, and significant investment in the nation’s security agencies.

2. Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development

The President highlighted substantial economic growth, with Ghana’s GDP increasing from $58.9 billion in 2017 to $79.5 billion in 2024. He also mentioned significant infrastructure projects, including the completion of 1,200 kilometers of new roads and the construction of 200 new schools, aiming to enhance the nation’s development and improve citizens’ quality of life.

3. Healthcare Improvements

Akufo-Addo reported advancements in healthcare, such as the establishment of 50 new hospitals under the Agenda 111 initiative and the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme. These efforts are designed to increase access to quality healthcare services across the country.

4. Agricultural Advancements

The President discussed the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs program, which has led to increased food production and reduced imports. He also noted that the second phase of the program has outlined a 5-year strategic plan to ensure food sufficiency and resilience, focusing on 11 priority products, including maize, rice, soybean, and poultry. 

5. Commitment to Democratic Principles

In his address, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to democratic governance, emphasizing the importance of free and fair elections. He urged the Electoral Commission and political parties to ensure credible elections, highlighting that the upcoming December 7 polls are crucial for the nation’s democratic growth.
