The Kpandai District Assembly in the Northern Region has disbursed a total amount of GH¢219,300 to 97 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) financed under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to enhance their livelihoods.
The disbursement was meant to support them in education, health, and income-generating activities.
The support package included the presentation of six deep freezers to selected beneficiaries in the area.
At a brief ceremony at the forecourt of the Assembly in Kpandai, Mr Haruna Abudu Karim, the District Chief Executive (DCE), for the area, said the initiative formed part of the government’s broader commitment towards promoting social inclusion, equity, and empowerment of vulnerable groups.
He said the disbursement covered GH¢9,000 for education, GH¢14,000 for medical support, GH¢33,300 for conferences and advocacy programmes, and GH¢163,000 for livelihood empowerment activities, adding that the gesture was aimed at helping beneficiaries live more dignified and independent lives.
Mr Karim disclosed that the Assembly had so far received GH¢303,568.41 as its share of the 2025 first and second quarter allocations of the DACF Disability Fund and gave assurance that more PwDs would be supported when subsequent releases were made.
He urged beneficiaries to make good use of the support, noting that the assistance was “not mere gifts but instruments to empower you to improve your living conditions and contribute to the development of the district.”
Touching on national efforts at empowering PwDs, the DCE praised President John Dramani Mahama for approving an upward review of the DACF allocation to PwDs from three to five per cent effective next year, saying the decision demonstrated the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities.
Mr Karim commended the Fund Management Committee, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, and other stakeholders for their role in ensuring a smooth disbursement process.
The DCE encouraged PwDs in the district not to relent but explore skills training opportunities such as soap making and leather weaving to sustain and empower them economically.
Madam Asana Tahiru, the Chairperson for Persons with Disability in the district, thanked the Assembly for the timely release of the funds, and lauded the government for increasing funding allocation to PwDs.
She appealed to the Assembly to consider establishing a Resource Development Centre to build the skills of PwDs in the district, to empower them to improve their conditions.
