Land dispute at Akwatialine leaves one dead, several injured

A violent land dispute at Akwatialine, a suburb of Kumasi, has left one person dead and several others seriously injured following a shooting incident on Wednesday.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about insecurity and the handling of disputed lands, particularly where cases are pending before the courts.

Baba Sule Karim, an Opinion Leader of the area, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, explained that a private land developer, who claimed ownership of the land under litigation, arrived at the site with Police personnel and began demolishing structures.

He said the developer’s team pulled down buildings and restricted access to parts of the community without prior notice to occupants.

Some residents the GNA spoke to reported that the sudden action triggered panic, forcing hundreds to flee their homes, leaving behind personal belongings.

Some affected persons said their makeshift structures and fences were destroyed, while others claimed their properties were damaged during the unrest.

Although residents admitted they were not the rightful owners of the land, they maintained that with the matter still before the courts, no party had the authority to undertake demolition.

They argued that even where demolition becomes necessary, due process and adequate notice must be followed to prevent violence and protect lives.

The residents noted that earlier engagements on the dispute had created the expectation that the matter would be resolved through legal means rather than force.

They have therefore appealed to the government and relevant authorities to intervene, provide compensation, and ensure strict adherence to judicial processes.

They also called for urgent support for affected families to help them rebuild their lives, stressing that the incident has disrupted livelihoods and children’s education.

Meanwhile, the Manhyia District Police Command had restored calm in the area and confirmed the arrest of one suspect in connection with the incident.

The Police said investigations were underway to identify those responsible for the shooting and to ascertain whether proper procedures were followed in carrying out the demolition.

They assured the public of a thorough and transparent process to ensure justice for all parties involved.
