Lati Hamilton family refurbishes Emergency Ward at Cape Coast Metro Hospital

The Lati Hamilton family of Cape Coast has handed over a fully refurbished Emergency Ward at the Cape Coast Metropolitan Hospital to its management.

Abandoned for nearly two decades, the unit was transformed within two months into a modern space featuring 13 new beds, air conditioners, television sets, and ceiling fans.

The refurbishment has revived critical emergency services and eased the burden on the overstretched Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The project was undertaken in memory of the family’s late mother and grandmother, Madam Martha Ekua Hamilton, a dedicated nurse who served at the facility.

Known for their entrepreneurship and philanthropy, the family stepped in to restore a vital piece of Cape Coast’s healthcare history that had suffered years of infrastructural decay.

For decades, the Metropolitan Hospital served as the main health facility before the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital was commissioned.

However, its proximity to the sea exposed it to corrosive salty breeze, which eroded much of its infrastructure.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Lati Hamilton, a representative of the family, who was born at the facility, explained the family’s strong support for the emergency unit, driven by their deep commitment to giving back to society.

He underscored the critical importance of human resources in patient care, stressing that skilled staff formed the backbone of effective treatment.

“In the chaos of crisis, the emergency unit isn’t just walls and machines, but the heartbeat of hope, where compassionate humans turn survival into stories of triumph,” he said.

Mr Hamilton appealed to the hospital’s management to properly maintain the donated equipment and structure to ensure it serves patients for years to come.

On behalf of Dr Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, Central Regional Director of Health Services, Mr Serene Akpanya, Deputy Director of Administration, commended the family for the gesture.

He urged health workers to exhibit the highest standards of professionalism in their duties.

“Your compassion, precision and unwavering dedication not only heal bodies but also restore hope in our communities. Let every patient interaction reflect the excellence that defines our noble profession,” he said.

Representing the facility’s management, Mr Akpanya pledged commitment to maintaining the facility to the best of their ability.

“Together, we will uphold the trust placed in us,” he assured, adding that nurses should continue to be the unyielding pillars of professionalism.

“Your hands heal, your professionalism inspires; we pledge to keep this facility shining as your fortress of care,” he stated.
