Mr. Listowel Agbesi, the President of Labone Old Students Association (LOSA), has urged members to continue to uphold the development aspiration of the association through regular donations and contributions to the cause of their alma mater.
This, he said, would ensure that the association continued the baton of championing the academic excellence of the school.
He called on members abroad and, in the Diaspora, to demonstrate commitment to supporting the development of activities of the school in cash or material for this noble cause.
Mr. Agbeli made the call in an interview with the media at the end of the 14th LOSA anniversary health walk in Accra.
He said a good number of year groups have adopted major development projects which would tackle key development challenges presently bedeviling the school.
The 10-kilometer walk began from the school’s premises, through the La Township, Beach Road, Old Castle Road, Osu RE, Osu Oxford Street, Danquah Circle and back to the school.
Mr. Agbeli said the event was one of the flagship activities of LOSA intended to create a stronger bond among members and to create a platform to openly discuss the school’s development challenges.
Outlining some of the development interventions from old students, he said, currently renovation works on the science laboratory were ongoing, and that the 1984-year group has donated 300 mono desks to the school.
“Some year groups are collaborating with non-government organisations to provide computers for the school, among many other interventions,” he added.
The President said the association has received information on the deplorable state of some washrooms, and that members were in collaboration with the Parent Teacher Association to ensure that the problem was addressed.
He identified sanitation and water as the two major development challenges confronting the school and that efforts are underway to provide a lasting solution to these concerns to enable students enjoy their stay in the school and provide conducive learning environment.
Mr. Agbeli expressed gratitude to all members for their support during the 75th anniversary celebration which has partly funded the renovation of the science laboratory.
“A lot of year groups are pursuing development projects for the school which are yet to be coordinated well,” he said.
He thanked LOSA ‘87 for being the major handlers of this year’s event and expressed the hope that the group would do greater things beyond the gesture.
He urged other old students in the diaspora to come on board to give back to their alma mater to enhance teaching and learning in the school.
Madam Milicent Adjei, the Vice- Chairperson of LOSA National Council and a member of the ’96-year group, said come next year, every year group would take on a project for development to ensure that maximum attention was given to development concerns of the school.
She said plans were afoot to award students who have acquitted themselves well in the next speech and prize giving day as part of the association’s next line-up of activities.
She described the attendance as very encouraging and called on all members to avail themselves of future programmes to provide a common front for the development of their alma mater.
Side attraction to the event included games such as men and women penalty, sack race, lime and spoon, tug of war, mama and dada and musical chairs.
There was also a free health check for participants, aerobics and a food bazaar.
