Mahama calls for restraint, dialogue in Middle East conflict

President John Dramani Mahama has called on parties in the Middle East conflict to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue to end hostilities.

He expressed concern over the loss of lives and the impact of the conflict on global economies.

Speaking at the Good Friday Miracle Service of the United Denominations Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches at the Black Star Square in Accra, President Mahama urged all sides to embrace diplomatic solutions and avoid further escalation.

“And so, we call for restraint, we call for dialogue, we call for a just and lasting peace, because the message of Easter is universal, that hatred cannot drive out hatred. The only thing that can drive out hatred is love,” he said.

More than one thousand people, mostly civilians, have been killed and dozens injured in the five‑week war between Israel‑US and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026. Global economies have also been severely affected.

Reflecting on the significance of Easter, the President highlighted sacrifice, hope and renewal as core lessons, reminding Ghanaians that progress for individuals and the nation follows resilience and commitment to moral values.

Before victory, there is sacrifice. You cannot be victorious without sacrificing, he emphasised.

President Mahama also urged Ghanaians to embrace forgiveness and reconciliation as pillars of personal and national growth, encouraging citizens to resolve past conflicts and embody Christ‑like generosity.

He stressed that faith must be matched with responsible actions in communities, workplaces and public service to achieve development goals.

“Let our prayers be matched with responsibility,” he said, urging citizens to actively contribute to the wellbeing of their neighbours and communities.

The President said that national transformation depended more on the character of citizens than on government policies.

“It’s not the policies that will transform this nation. It’s the character of Ghanaians that will make Ghana transform,” he said, and encouraged citizens not to lose hope despite challenges, and to act with integrity, responsibility and faith‑driven purpose.
